The Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) has become the most important archaeological event on the calendar of many archaeologists. Whether working or studying in government agencies, archaeological units, university departments, museums, archaeological laboratories, research institutes, libraries or anywhere else, the EAA's Annual Meeting has something for you. It is a meeting place for archaeologists from different national and institutional areas, a crucible for the development of the profession in Europe, and a forum for discussing the management of the archaeological heritage and our understanding of it. Results of recent work, new ideas, and insights into archaeological theory and practice will be presented, discussed and exchanged. The Meeting is also an opportunity for personal contacts and friendships to be made and renewed across European boundaries.

We would like to invite you to take part in the 1999 Annual Meeting of the EAA. It will take place in Bournemouth, United Kingdom, from 14^th to 19^th September 1999.

The meeting is being promoted by the Archaeology Group in the School of Conservation Sciences, Bournemouth University, with the assistance of a number of sponsoring bodies including, among others, English Heritage, the Council for British Archaeology, the Institute of Field Archaeologists, and Antiquity. The Meeting will be held under the supervision of a National Advisory Committee, comprising representatives from government agencies, archaeology departments in UK universities, museums, professional and voluntary bodies, and EAA representatives. A Local Organizing Committee is looking after practical matters and helping to ensure that those attending the meeting will have a warm welcome and a fulfilling and enjoyable time.

The Meeting will centre around three main blocks of contributions, each containing a range of sessions organized as symposia, seminars, round tables, and poster presentations. There will also be exhibitions and bookshops. The EAA's 1999 Annual Business Meeting will be held during the conference, and a range of excursions and visits is also planned. The overarching aim is to promote and contribute to the continuing free and open discussion of the numerous identities, contexts, and traditions of European archaeology.

As you will see from these pages, the Meeting will provide interesting discussions for those working within all of the many and diverse sectors of archaeology. We especially wish to encourage established archaeologists and students to take part in the Meeting and the organizing committees have already been working hard to find ways of keeping costs and prices as low as possible in order to allow the widest possible participation.

Welcome to the Fifth Annual Meeting; this is where it begins. We very much hope to see you in Bournemouth next September.
