Hello and welcome to the Home Page for the MARS Project.
The Monuments at Risk Survey began in 1994 with the aim of studying
the changing state of England's archaeological resource. It's main
purpose was to provide a systematic quantification of the resource and
set benchmarks for the monitoring of future change. The results of
the work were published in June of 1998.

Introduction to The MARS Project
This introduction to the work of the project was written by Prof. T Darvill
(School of Conservation Sciences, Bournemouth University) and Dr. G Wainwright
(formerly Chief Archaeologist, English Heritage) and provides the general
setting to the work.
The Martian Chronicles
The Martian Chronicles were the bulletins of The MARS Project, containing
information on the workings of the project. Each Martian Chronicle was
put online at the time of publication.
Further Information
A number of initiatives following from the MARS project are being developed
and news of these will be posted in due course. A strategy document
based on the findings of MARS has been published and is available on
the internet at:
